Berlin: New bridge holds traffic on the Mühlendamm Bridge in Breath
The upcoming new building phase of the Mühlendamm Bridge causes unrest among drivers in Berlin-Mitte. From Monday, the southeastern part of the bridge will be prepared for dismantling, which means that there will only be one lane each by summer 2027. This has already triggered criticism from the "Changing Cities" association because there is no clear bypass concept for coping with traffic.
The replacement new building of the Mühlendamm Bridge is urgently required because the condition of the bridge has continuously deteriorated. With a planned completion of the construction work by the turn of 2028/2029, traffic safety is to be guaranteed in the long term and the infrastructure is adapted to modern standards. The total costs for the construction project amount to 80 million euros and are borne by the federal government and the state of Berlin.
The association "Changing Cities" expressed concerns about the lack of bypass concept. The spokeswoman Ragnhild Sørensen warns of impending traffic jams and a relocation of traffic to surrounding residential areas. The Senate Administration defends itself and assures that traffic routes via the Mühlendamm Bridge will continue to be available.
It remains to be seen how the traffic situation will develop in the coming years, while the new bridge on the Mühlendamm Bridge is being built. The traffic collapse could be a major challenge for drivers in Berlin-Mitte in the next few years. - nag
