Environmental protection as a life insurance: criticism of Leyen's re -election

In his comment on the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as EU Commission President, Olaf Bandt, chairman of the federal government, criticizes the politician's plans. While he welcomes the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, he criticizes the lack of concrete measures to solve the climate and species crisis. He also warns of the consequences of the combustion engine and the promotion of CCS. It is clear to the federal government: Environmental protection is not a disability for the economy, but essential for society. According to the Bandt, however, the plan of Von der Leyen has large gaps, especially with regard to energy and resource consumption and to the exit from fossil energies. The federal government calls for more public investments in climate and environmental protection. (Symbolbild/MB)

from the Leyen's re-election: abdomen instead of moon landing?

The current re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as EU Commission President raises questions whether her re-election is really a great success.

When presenting your plans, there is both approval and criticism. Olaf Bandt, Chairman of the Bund for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND), comments on the plans of von der Leyen:

"We welcome the fact that Ursula von der Leyen is committed to continuing the Green Deal. The proposed reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 by 90 percent is an important step in the right direction. However, its plans lack clarity how exactly the climate and species crisis should be solved. Some of the proposed measures are even in the opposite direction. The promotion of CCS is a climate and economic policy.

Another criticism of Leyen's plans concerns the existing gaps. Reducing energy and resource consumption as well as the complete exit from fossil energies are urgently necessary. In addition, more public investments in climate, nature and environmental protection are required to finance the change in the economy and to enable social compensation measures, especially in the area of housing construction. Unfortunately, there are no concrete measures in these areas in the political guardrails presented. In view of the upcoming summer holidays, one could say that the re -election is just acceptable, but in the next school year we expect significantly better performance. ”
