Environmental aid calls for a stop of combustion promotion: an appeal to the government

The German Environmental Aid (DUH) raises the alarm! The traffic light government, led by the FDP, is planning an absurd promotion of internal combustion engines, which is more than questionable. An open letter is aimed at Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Minister of Economics Robert Habeck and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in which the DUH urgently demands: ending with the billions of billions for dirty engines! Instead, the advance to electrify road traffic must finally be made serious!

On October 24, the government is ready to present a package of measures to "strengthen the automotive industry". But what happens behind the scenes can hardly be grasped! The car companies have a list full of unfulfilled wishes, including purchase bonuses for electric cars and a lowering of the CO2 fleet limit values to 2025. Just as if you could simply suspend the impending fines due to environmental offenses!

The outcry of the environmentalists

DUH federal managing director Jürgen Resch hits the same notch with angered undertone. "The problems of the German car companies are the result of decades of wrong decisions," said Resch. Instead of investing in the future of electromobility, the big players such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen have increased their profits to an incredible 60 billion euros since 2020- despite the knowledge of the devastating effects of their diesel and petrol engines on the climate!

What happens here? Minister Lindner and Wissing suggest to throw these profitable corporations into the throat, just because the profits may only be 55 billion euros? And while the combustion cars are further funded, the way for e-fuel should be cleared. This is not only unbelievable, but also dangerous for the progress of electromobility!

Time to act is now

Resch makes it clear: "In order to advance electromobility, the Federal Government must hire all support for combustion cars! The EU CO2 fleet limit values of the EU are indispensable!" With the current regulation, Germany is already missing its climate goals in the traffic sector - a disaster for environmental protection! The DUH calls for consequences and a clear turn to sustainable solutions.
