Peace through art: mosaic project for human rights in Berlin
A bridge of the mosaic: "Mosaic-Bridge / Mosaic Bridge" connects Berlin and Johannesburg
In September 2024, the old daycare center in Berlin became the backdrop of a unique international art project. Under the title "Mosaic-Bridge / Mosaik-Brücke", artists and citizens from Johannesburg and Berlin come together to create a fascinating 65 m² mosaic on the subject of human rights.
Inspired by Erich Kästner's words "Do not believe you would have millions of enemies. Your single enemy is called - war", the project symbolizes the power of peaceful coexistence and the importance of diversity. Every single mosaic stone, however small and unique it may be, contributes to a larger, harmonious overall picture - just like every person in society.
In an era of increasing digitization and polarization, the project creates an analog, creative space for encounters and exchange. It presents a lively vision for peaceful coexistence and work together, in which diversity and individuality are valued.
diversity in mosaic stones: common shaping for everyone
The public design phase of the mosaic takes place daily from September 8th to 28th, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone - regardless of previous knowledge - is cordially invited to participate in the project. Only curiosity, openness, mindfulness and respect are expected.
The mosaic project was launched by the workshop for Mosaicist's mosaic art, the South African-German painter and action artist Liz Crossley and the artist collective of the WARGA Art Trust in Johannesburg. On site, the project team works closely with various clubs and organizations, such as the Jazzkeller 69 e.V., the house collective 22 and the youth ship "Remili" of the Technical Youth Free Free and Bilding Society (TJFBG) gGmbH.
The project is supported, among other things, by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion, the Treptow-Köpenick district office, the partnership for Democracy Schöneweide, BVV Treptow-Köpenick as well as by numerous local companies and volunteer citizens.
