Insights into the prison world: new exhibition in Johannisthal!
The Johannisthal gallery will open an impressive exhibition at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024, which illuminates the mysterious and often hidden aspects of German judicial. The presentation entitled "Refusion. A look at German correctional facilities" shows the impressive photographs of Michael Belhadi and Michel Ptasinski, which have documented twelve prisons in Germany over a period of five years, including institutions such as Bautzen, Berlin-Moabit, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart-Stammheim.
The exhibition offers a unique insight into life behind the prison walls. The pictures are not only aesthetically appealing, but also invite you to reflect: they show deserted spaces that hold the architecture and establishment of these institutions. The viewers are stimulated to think about the everyday life of the inmates and the interactions that take place despite the high walls between them and the outside world.
insights into a closed world
The photographs that were originally published in an illustrated book in 2018 are now part of a new selection that offers a deeper view of the often invisible reality of the prison. The careful selection of the images not only conveys the strictness of existence in prisons, but also shows the human aspects that take place behind the walls. Central questions about responsibility and ethics are raised that are important for our society.
At the opening of the exhibition, high-ranking guests will speak, including Marco Brauchmann, district councilor for further training, school, culture and sport, as well as Milena Mercer, the head of the municipal galleries Treptow-Köpenick. This not only offers visitors the opportunity to look at the impressive works, but also to enter into a dialogue about the topics of the prison and social responsibility.
Accompanying the exhibition, a supporting program is planned to further stimulate interest. On Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, at 4 p.m., a dialogical leadership will take place, for example, in which photographer Michael Belhadi, a former inmate called Murat A., and curator Milena Mercer will share his works and experiences. In addition, on Friday, January 17, 2025, a documentary entitled "Legal Protection in prison" in cooperation with Tatort Zukunft e. V. celebrate premiere.
The exhibition not only offers a visual experience, but also the possibility of reflection and dialogue on important social issues. Entry is free of charge, so everyone has the chance to experience these important insights.
