Berlin new school building: design artists in Köpenick!

Stellingdamm 10, 12555 Berlin, Deutschland - On June 16, 2025, it was announced that as part of the Berlin school building offensive, an art on the construction competition for the construction of a new elementary school at Stellingdamm/Hirt testeta 10 in Berlin-Köpenick took place. The district office Treptow-Köpenick invited twelve talented artists to develop artistic designs for primary school as well as the associated sports hall and the outdoor facilities. From this competition, two designs were unanimously and equally recommended for implementation: "Pipe tube tube" by Nándor Angstenberger and "Forms that preserve the concepts" by Patricia Sandonis. Particularly noteworthy is the design of Angstenberger, which refers to the historical gas plant at the location. His concept provides to provide a complete staircase wall in the school building and the long wall in the foyer of the sports hall with a hand drawing that uses the exposed concrete wall as a "leaf". This could create a fascinating visual connection between the past and the future.

In the first phase, ideas sketches for the entrance area and/or the main staircase are required. Up to ten artists are selected from the first phase who have to work out detailed designs in the second phase. The competition is part of the Berlin school building offensive, which has been running since 2017 and reacts to the influx and increasing birth rate.

In addition, the Lichtenberg district office has opened a similar, open and anonymous competition for the integrated secondary school on the Breiten Luch. The new building is carried out by the Howoge Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH on behalf of the State of Berlin. Cultural City Councilor Dr. Catrin Gocksch (CDU) emphasizes the great importance of artistic design in these structural projects.

The registration deadline for participation in this competition is December 8, 2023. Interested artists should register via email, whereby the number of participants is limited to 100. In the first phase, conceptual considerations must be submitted in the form of idea sketches, whereby no fee is carried out. Expenses are only provided for the second phase if appropriate designs are created. A total of up to 372,000 euros (gross) are available for the implementation of art in construction.

These different competitions not only prove the commitment of the city of Berlin, but also the persistent importance of art in the field of education, which both creates identity and promotes aesthetic and creative learning environments.
