Tree tour in Treptower Park: Experts show their work

Tree tour in Treptower Park: Experts show their work

On the international day of the tree, the Street and Grünfärfärfacheamt Treptow-Köpenick offered a tree tour for the first time. During the tour of the Treptower Park, two tree inspectors and a tree controller of interested citizens brought their work closer. They explained how to proceed with a tree control that each tree has received an "address" (tree number) and a "patient file" and receives a "preventive examination" annually. In addition, it was clarified that color markings on the trees do not announce any felling, but only serve for orientation.

A "further examination" on the tree was also shown to the participants, in which the drilling resistance and the wood density to determine the condition of the tree are measured with a resistographer. A total of ten tree inspectors work in office, each of which looks after around 10,000 trees in public green areas, at streets, schoolyards, playgrounds and cemeteries. Their main task is to ensure the traffic safety of the trees and to maintain it as long as possible.

The participants expressed a positive statement about the tree management, and the aim is to offer them annually and possibly to expand it. So there is a great interest of the citizens in the work and care of the trees in the district.

Here is a table with further information:

| Topic | Information |
| —————- | ——————————————————————————- |
| Tree species | Oak, beech, linden, maple, chestnut, birch, fir, spruce, pine |
| Biological characteristics | Photosynthesis, cell structure, root system, foliage, flower |
| Ecological meaning Air purification, CO2 storage, habitat for animals, soil fertility |
| Story | Plants in the 18th century, meaning in nature conservation, development of tree care methods |

The organization of such tree tours can help strengthen the awareness of the citizens for the importance and care of the trees. The positive response to the first event shows that the citizens would like to learn more about the work of the tree controls. It remains to be hoped that such initiatives will continue to be appealed and help to promote the connection to nature in the urban environment.
