THW LVBBSBBST: Together against the African swine plague
Berlin (ots)
Against the spread of the African swine plague (ASP), a significant use of the technical relief organization (THW) in Germany is currently being carried out. The emergency services come from the regional associations of Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt and have been active since yesterday to transport urgent material for the construction of protection fences from Prignitz to Hesse. This is a reaction to the growing risk from the virus, which is particularly fatal for wild and domestic pigs.
A team of THW members started moving the fence material in columns of six to seven vehicles. In a first section of the campaign, about half of the required material were brought to Hesse. The support extends over a total of 150 helpers who are in use against the ASP. Logistics - including loading, transport and accommodation and catering for the emergency services - are fully organized by the THW. The fences are being built at the request of the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment.
urgency and spread of the ASP
The ASP is not only a problem for the farmers, but also represents a potential danger to wild boar tribes in Germany and other neighboring countries. The highly contemplative viral infection has increased in recent years and has occurred primarily in Hesse. The construction of the protection fence was necessary after a defense situation was determined. In this context, the veterinary office in the Prignitz district has already stored 90 kilometers of fence material to counteract the impending spread.
In addition to the protective fences, THW forces also work on an electric fence that will be 50 kilometers long to further secure the national borders. Around 100 THW forces are involved in this project every day, and the work requires close cooperation between different national associations to drive the construction quickly. The THW forces come from numerous local associations, including Quedlinburg, Potsdam, Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg. This national cooperation plays a central role in making the construction of the protective devices quickly and effectively.
The technical relief organization is characterized by volunteer work and has around 88,000 voluntary members in the Federal Republic. Your expertise and technical equipment are required in order to be able to react quickly in emergencies. These missions range from technicians for population protection to international cooperation, for example in the context of operations for the United Nations or within the European Union.
In view of the serious threat to agriculture by the ASP, the current use of the THW is an indispensable step to prevent the spread of the virus and to protect the pigs. The organization is based on jumping on both locally and nationally in such crisis situations and thus contributes significantly to coping with crisis in Germany.
