Climate, pumpkin and compost: allotments against climate collapse

Last weekend, the district office Tempelhof-Schöneberg organized a well-attended event with the district association of the allotment gardeners Schöneberg-Friedenau e.V. with the title "Climate, pumpkin and compost-with small gardens against the climate collapse!". The reason for the event was the publication of a new flyer entitled "Mein Kledarten - Ten Measures for more biodiversity and climate adjustment". The flyer, which was developed by the environmental and nature conservation office of the district office, contains 10 simple tips for climate-adapted and biodive allotment gardens and will in future be handed over to all tenants of a new allotment garden in the district.

The event offered a mixture of theoretical input and practical examples of climate adaptation, community work and allotment gardens. Dr. Fritz Reusswig from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research gave scientific input, followed by representatives of the allotment youth and various allotment gardeners who presented their projects and projects for climate adaptation and biodiversity. The event ended with a walk to the climate show garden in the Green Aue colony.

District Councilor Dr. Saskia Ellenbeck emphasized the importance of allotments as green lungs and natural climate systems in urban areas. Andreas Alex, first chairman of the district association of allotment gardeners Schöneberg-Friedenau e.V., was positive about the future of the allotment gardens in the city and praised the commitment of city planners and politicians for their preservation and further development. Dr. Fritz Reusswig from PIK e.V. praised the brochure of the district office as an important guide for natural and climate -adapted allotment gardens.

The event made it clear that allotment gardens offer a valuable potential to accept the challenges of climate change. With the flyer and the event, a contribution to the sensitization and implementation of measures for more biodiversity and climate adjustment in allotment gardens was made. Allotment gardens are thus positioned as important elements for environmental and nature conservation in urban rooms.

A table with information about the individual measures from the flyer could offer a quick overview of the climate -adapted tips for allotments:

| Measure | Description |
| ————————————– | --——————————— |
| Rainwater use | Use of rainwater to irrigate the plants |
| Composting | Composting organic waste for soil improvement |
| Creation of flower strips | Creation of habitats for insects and butterflies |
| Bird drinks and nesting boxes | Provision of water and nesting places for birds |
| Establishment of pesticides | Use of natural methods for pest control |
| Mixed cultures | Cultivation of various plant species to promote biodiversity |
| Integration of dead wood | Creation of habitats for small and mushrooms |
| Reduction of lawns | Conversion of lawns into diverse beds and flower meadows |
| Creation of shelter options | Provision of hiding places for small animals and insects |
| Maintenance of old fruit types | Cultivation and maintenance of traditional fruit varieties for biodiversity |

The event and the new flyers thus set an important sign of environmental and nature conservation in urban rooms and motivate allotment gardeners to actively contribute to promoting biodiversity and climate adaptation.
