Lonely farewell: commemoration for deceased in our city

In a heart -abrading celebration of memory and compassion, people come together to commemorate those who went into loneliness. Especially at a time when more and more people have to do without relatives, the importance of such events becomes all the more clear. In the Evangelical Church Circle, church representatives and district representatives stand up for those who were often all alone at the end of their lives.

Martina Steffen-Elis, the deputy superintendent, draws attention to the sad phenomenon: “More and more people have no more relatives. Many not only lose their strength with age, but also friends of friends or former work colleagues, to whom there were still contacts." She appeals to the community and encourages everyone to attend the celebration, regardless of whether they have been known to the deceased or not. "It is a sign against loneliness in our city, and as humans we can do something."

a worthy farewell

The commemoration is not just a formal event, but a truly powerful moment in which the grief and the common memory are in the foreground. District City Councilor Oliver Schworck sums up the importance of these celebrations: "Most people have already participated in a burial in their lives and know what importance such a farewell to the family and the friends of the deceased has." Especially the fate of the 266 people who are recognized this year attract attention - because not all of them were without social contacts. "We can no longer find out whether the deceased really attended a group of seniors or until recently," says Schworck.

Another interesting aspect of this commemoration is the presence of prominent representatives of the district. District Mayor Jörn Oltmann and the pastor and superintendent Michael Raddatz will also take part. The commemoration thus becomes a common platform of appreciation, where a last honorary poem is dedicated to all deceased. A feeling of community and solidarity is in the foreground.

data protection plays a crucial role in planning this event. For reasons of privacy, the list of lonely deceased people is not published. But for former neighbors or acquaintances there is the possibility to obtain information. Interested parties can contact City Councilor Oliver Schworck's office to find out whether the name of their deceased acquaintances will be read during the commemoration. A little step to honor the lonely memory and to remember that nobody is really alone.
