Voluntary cleaning stumbling blocks and preserving memories in the Bavarian quarter
In the heart of the Bavarian quarter, history was brought to life today! Hundreds of volunteers wrapped around the stumbling blocks on a significant cleaning campaign. Organized by the volunteer office Tempelhof-Schöneberg in close cooperation with the stumbling block initiative, this campaign was an impressive sign of memory.
District Mayor Jörn Oltmann, who personally supported the initiative, emphasized the immense importance of this engagement. Not only was cleaned here as part of the volunteer days of the Paritätische Wohlfahrtverband! It was also taught, discussed and the legacy of those who suffered alive during the dark times of National Socialism.
preserve a valuable legacy
The heart of the cleaning campaign was the liveliness of the stories behind the stumbling blocks. Each of these small but meaningful monuments tells of the fates of Jewish citizens - innocent people who were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust. During the event, members of the stumbling block initiative shared moving stories and historical backgrounds to the forced houses and the anti-Jewish laws, which were so strongly shaped by the Bavarian Quarter.
Jörn Oltmann emphasized: "The work of the stumbling block initiative is invaluable to keep the memory of the victims of National Socialism present in everyday life. The commitment of the many people who have been on a voluntary basis in the stumbling block cleaning campaign and thus set an important signal against anti-Semitism."
Together against forgetting
The enthusiasm and the use of the volunteers were noticeable! You not only cleaned the memorial stones, but also set a strong sign of solidarity and memory. District Mayor Oltmann, the volunteer office and the stumbling block initiative thank everyone who contributed to the preservation and protection of the memorial stones. This joint commitment shows that remembering of the past is still urgent and necessary today.
