Berlin: Heat help for homeless people during the summer months

The Berlin heating help offers homeless people in the capital during the hot summer months. According to the Social Senate Administration, between 22 and 113 people used this offer every day in June. Homeless people are particularly at risk in extreme heat because they often have no access to sufficient drinking water or cooling.

In addition to the year -round help, such as homeless day care centers, six other projects will be financed from the beginning of June to the end of August as part of the heating aid. In the first month of the offer, an average of 56 people visited one of the contact points with retreat options. The project of the International Federation in Kurmärkische Strasse in Schöneberg and the Taborgemeinde in Kreuzberg were particularly popular

In the Kurmärkische Straße 1-3, homeless people have the opportunity to take a shower, eat and drink from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Furthermore, articles for solar and heat protection such as sunscreen, headgear or thermal bottles are output. The City Station of the Association for Berlin City Mission has also expanded its offer as part of the heat help. 25 to 28 people take the opportunity to shower there every day.

To request help, homeless people can choose the help hotline or the number of the heat bus of the Berlin city mission. In June, only one to three calls received every day. Digital information via a contact form on the homepage is reported about four to five times a week.

The offers and contact details of the Berlin Heat Help can be found on the social administration website. If someone sees a homeless person who needs help, this can be reported either via the heat bus or the help hotline. It is recommended to address the person concerned beforehand and to ask if they wish and accept help. Alternatively, the whereabouts of a homeless person can also be transmitted to the city mission using an online form.

The Berlin heating aid is an important project to support homeless people during the heat period and to offer them the opportunity to cool down and supply. Especially at high temperatures, it is important that all people have access to adequate resources to protect their health.
