Study shows that difference between official and real CO2 emissions from cars grows to 14 percent

A report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) shows that the discrepancy between the officially specified CO2 emissions and the actual fuel consumption from new cars rose from 8 to 2022 from 8 to 14 percent. These results also have a major impact for Berlin citizens, especially with regard to environmental pollution and the costs of fuel.

in Berlin, where traffic plays a major role, the effects of this discrepancy are particularly noticeable. The increasing CO2 emissions negatively influence the air quality in the city and contribute to global warming. In addition, the higher fuel consumption leads to higher costs for citizens, since they have to spend more for petrol or diesel than expected. This not only burdens the walls of the citizens, but also affects the general quality of life in the city.

It is important that the European Commission takes measures to counteract this development. The introduction of on-board fuel and energy consumption monitoring devices (OBFCM) could help reduce the discrepancy between the real and the official values. These devices would make it possible to collect more realistic fuel consumption data and could help correct the official CO2 emission values based on transparent and reliable data.

In addition, this data could also serve to better inform consumers about the costs and environmental impact of vehicles. Access to this data could enable citizens to make well -founded decisions when buying a vehicle and contribute to more sustainable mobility in Berlin

In order to ensure transparency and public control, experts suggest that the OBFCM data anonymously and supplemented by relevant vehicle features. In this way, independent research institutions could access representative, real fuel and energy consumption data and analyze the effects on the environment.

It is crucial that measures are taken to reduce the discrepancy between official and real CO2 emissions and to inform consumers more transparently. This is not only important for the environment, but also for the financial burden on citizens. With effective regulatory measures and transparent data, we can contribute to more sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility in Berlin.

Data of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in Berlin:
| Year | Average CO2 emission difference (%) | Average fuel consumption difference (%) |

| 2019 | - | - |
| 2020 | - | - |
