Dispute over the web system: Nature conservation against water tourism in Werder!

Werder (Havel), Deutschland - Water tourism increases more and more in Brandenburg. More and more people are choosing to explore the region's picturesque waters with boats. A central project is the expansion of the Marina Zernsee jetty in Werder (Havel), which is supposed to create more berths ( rbb24 ). The district has granted the building permit for this, but the bridge runs through an important water lily field that has now been brought into the focus of the nature conservation organizations.

The Nature Conservation Association of Germany (NABU) complained against the approval to protect the water lilies. These plants are not only beautiful, but also habitat for many aquatic animals, including the protected hood intake, which is currently breeding in this region. The NABU was provisionally right: the new bridge must not be used completely, which brings the port operator into economic difficulties.

conflict about the bridge

Randy Schirmeister, Managing Director of Marina Zernsee, expressed that they could only use part of the bridge, which significantly reduces the investment of 2.5 million euros. In the discussion about the bridge, both NABU and the port operator criticize the district, since they have not adequately considered the effects on the water lily field. The NABU calls for a stronger inclusion of nature conservation associations in approval processes.

The water lilies are under nature conservation and are in danger through intensive use and other threats ( All answering.de ). These threats include in particular land consolutions and the drainage of water. There are over 40 types of water lilies that are widespread in many waters in Germany and can become up to three meters high. Seer lilies are well adapted to their habitats and have special properties that enable them to thrive on constantly changing water levels.

economic challenges of water tourism

The situation is not only challenging for the NABU and Marina Zernsee. A recent study shows that the industry of water tourism in Brandenburg is facing significant challenges ( Tourismus-brandenburg.de ). In particular, the lack of berths and specialists as well as the high bureaucracy put a strain on the development. The industry calls for a security and expansion of the accessible waters from politics.

In view of this complex situation, innovative approaches are required. The focus should be on sustainable and high quality growth. The willingness to use e-mobility could be a step in the right direction. However, as the negotiations between the parties involved via the web system and the protection of the water lilies show, the conflict over water tourism in Brandenburg remains a sensitive and challenging topic.
