Dispute over Spätis: What is the best for Berlin?

Title: Controversy dispute over tables and benches in front of Berlin Spätis

A bizarre dispute sparked in Pankow, a district of Berlin, which could be symptomatic for the entire city. The district office is planning a ban on late sales offices, called Spätis, to put their tables and benches in front of the door.

While some perceive this ban as an attack on an important cultural asset that has its place as a social place with affordable prices in the anonymous and increasingly expensive big city, others just want to rest in front of nocturnal drinkers and, above all, wild pinclemen. The district office Pankow has recently received more complaints from residents about noise and urine laughs near Spätis.

This is a dilemma that is difficult to dissolve. Various attitudes, wishes and needs meet, all of whom have their justification. So the question is, how can you find a solution here? A ban on external seating for Spätis is certainly not the correct answer. This would not only affect the attitude to the lifestyle of many Berliners, but also a business model of the dealers. If, on the other hand, if you ignore the needs of the residents for night's sleep and clean house entrances, this would also be wrong. It is in politics to take care of a solution, especially to the black-red Senate who wants to achieve the best for Berlin.

But what exactly does the "best for Berlin" mean? The answer is actually very simple: the retailers have to point out their guests that after 10 p.m. there must be calm, similar to how it is the case in any other pub or bar in Berlin. Furthermore, more public toilets have to be made available, preferably free of charge for users.

Although there are generally progress in toilets, according to the Berlin state government, accessible and high -quality public toilets are part of the basic supply of a city worth living. Around 420 public toilets are listed in the city area on the website of the Senate Environmental Administration, but most of them are chargeable. Especially when you consider that everyone has to go to the toilet at some point, even if the last money for a drink in the spati, this is not ideal.

That is why a pilot project with 100 free public toilets has been running for a year. There are eight of them in Pankow, which is below the average when you consider that Pankow is the most populous district in Berlin. Especially in the south of the district, in Prenzlauer Berg, a long-time tourist hotspot, there are not enough toilets.

For a long time, people there have been complaining about the phenomenon of overtourism, similar to Friedrichshain, Mitte, Kreuzberg, Barcelona or Amsterdam. There are too many visitors who are often keen to celebrate and encounter an infrastructure that has not grown. The best thing for Berlin would therefore be to end this state quickly and to improve the infrastructure. Otherwise, a ban on external seating before Spätis could be the necessary consequence at some point.
