Memory of the victims of National Socialism in Steglitz-Zehlendorf
Next Saturday, January 27, 2024, the district council and the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office will commemorate the victims of the National Socialist racial madness and genocide. This day of commemoration is reminiscent of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp on January 27, 1945 and is said to remind the millions of people who were disenfranchised, persecuted, tortured and murdered under the National Socialist regime.
At 11:00 a.m. as part of this commemorative event, a quiet wreath laying will take place on the site of the former outdoor camp of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, Wismarer Straße / Eugen-Kleine-Brücke. Afterwards there is another quiet wreath in laying on the mirror wall on Hermann-Ehrens-Platz.The choice of these places for the wreath resolutions is of historical importance, since the former outer warehouse of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and the mirror wall on Hermann-Ehrens-Platz are important memorials in Berlin that are reminiscent of the victims of National Socialism.
The former outer camp of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp was a place of suffering and annihilation during the Second World War, in which forced laborers had to work under inhumane conditions. The mirror wall on Hermann-Ehrens-Platz is reminiscent of the expulsion and murder of Jews from Steglitz-Zehlendorf during the time of National Socialism.
The commemoration day offers the citizens of Steglitz-Zehlendorf the opportunity to jointly commemorate the victims of National Socialism and to deal with the history and effects of the Holocaust. It is an important step to ensure that the atrocities of the past are never forgotten and that the memory of the victims remains alive.
