The Steglitz-Zehlendorf district council decided with decision No. 1389/V on August 25, 2021 to rename the previously nameless place between the street tours "in the enclosure" in the Dahlem district into Estrongo Nachama Square. The official name will take place on Friday, February 16, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. on the area between the streets in the enclosure (14195 Berlin), in front of the Gail-S.-Halvorsen School. District City Councilor Urban Aykal cordially invites you to the naming ceremony.

The namesake of the square, Estrongo Nachama, was first cantor from 1947 to 2000, then the head of the Jewish community in Berlin. His weekly Sabbath celebration in the radio station Rias and the Jewish services for the American armed forces in the Chaplain Center in Hüttenweg made him known to many Berliners in East and West. Nachama survived the Auschwitz concentration camp due to its extraordinary baritone voice and, after the liberation in 1945 in West and East Berlin, campaigned for the interreligious dialogue and the collaboration between Jews and Christians. In 1999 he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his commitment.

Since 2013, the Berlin Foundation Meridian has reminded of its decades of commitment to understanding with the "Estrongo Nachama Prize for Tolerance and Civil Courage".

The naming of the square is an important recognition for the historical heritage and the merits of Estrongo Nachama. It is a symbolic act to maintain the memory of a remarkable man and to appreciate his efforts for interreligious dialogue and tolerance.
