Elderly aid planning in Steglitz-Zehlendorf: Large social study presented
District City Councilor Tim Richter is pleased about the long-awaited completion of the big social study on the life situation of older people in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. The study, which is based on a BVV decision from 2019 and an extensive survey of over 5,000 senior citizens, forms the basis for the conception of an elderly plan and the development of senior citizens' guidelines for the district. A total of around 310,515 people live in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, of which 79,013 are over 65 years old. The proportion of senior citizens in the total population is around 32.3 %. The survey was carried out on people aged 65 and over, 5.056 questionnaires being included in the analysis. However, the proportion of respondents with a migration background is underrepresented with only 4.9 % return rate.
The Steglitz-Zehlendorf district has adversity to the topic of geriatric care planning with the completion of the extensive social study on the life situation of older people. The knowledge gained from this serves as the basis for the conception of an elderly plan and the development of senior citizens' guidelines. The study was made by the relevant authors, Prof. Dr. Nils Lahmann, epidemiologist and nursing scientist and Prof. Dr. Horst Skarabis, emeritus chair holder for statistics. It is based on a BVV decision from 2019 and an extensive survey of over 5,000 seniors. The topics of the survey included income and living conditions, participation and commitment, health behavior, mobility and digitization as well as loneliness and future expectations.
With a view to the demographic structure of the district, the elderly to the elderly is of great relevance. Of a total of 310,515 people in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, 100,413 people are over 60 years old, which corresponds to a share of 32.3 % in the total population. It becomes clear that the concerns of older people play an important role in the planning and design of the district.
The survey of people aged 65 and over showed that 5,056 questionnaires could be included in the analysis. However, the proportion of respondents with a migration background is underrepresented with only 4.9 % return rate. This raises the question of the representativity of the study and leaves space for further studies on this topic.
Overall, the completion of the social study on the life situation of older people in Steglitz-Zehlendorf shows that the district takes the elderly to the elderly seriously and actively deals with the needs and challenges of older people. The knowledge gained will be crucial for the future senior citizens' orientation of the district.
