census 2022: 57 % of families live in their own four walls

A new census report shows that more and more families in Germany live in their own four walls. The data published in the census database today show that 57 % of all families in Germany have their own home. Compared to 2011, this is an increase of 1 %. The data also show significant differences between the federal states: 74 % of families with children live in their own four walls in Saarland, while it is only 25 % in Berlin.

The results also show that 7 % of families in Germany live on a living space of 40 to 59 square meters. Most families (19 %) have a living space of 60 to 79 square meters or 80 to 99 square meters. Interestingly, more families live in the city states of Berlin and Hamburg as well as in the eastern federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on a living space of 40 to 59 square meters than in national average

In addition, the census report shows that 15.1 % of households in Germany are inhabited by senior citizens who live alone. This corresponds to 6.1 million households. Compared to 2011, this is an increase of 2.6 %. Especially in the eastern federal states of Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony and Thuringia, the proportion of senior citizens who live alone is higher than on the national average

The results of the census 2022 are now available in the census database. This database enables users to call up detailed information about households and families and combine them with other characteristics. The census database is based on the same technology as the other official statistics in Germany and offers various output formats.

The census 2022 provided comparable results nationwide for a key date. The use of existing administrative data was avoided a high level of survey. The survey was used where administrative data was not available. A total of around 12 % of the population were interviewed. In addition to the counting of the buildings and apartments, information on rent, heating energy and vacancies were raised for the first time.

The census data are a valuable source of information for politics, science and the public. They offer important insights into the living situation of families and the demographic development of Germany.
