Security and freedom in danger: the alarming condition of the parks in Berlin

In Berlin there are always security problems in some parks. Here people regularly become victims of crimes, which is an alarming signal for the rule of law. Freedom to be able to move freely anywhere is a cornerstone of democracy and the rule of law. People should not have to be afraid of seeking certain places, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, nationality or religion.

Security is not a natural basis for our coexistence, but a task of the state. The state has the monopoly of violence and it is its duty to protect citizens. But how do politics, judiciary and police react to these security problems? Instead of finding solutions, an attempt is made to keep the incidents secret out of fear of failure. In Görlitzer Park alone there have been 40 sexual attacks and rapes in the past twelve months. This loses trust in the rule of law.

The alarming developments cannot be overlooked. The acts of violence, knife attacks and attacks are increasing dramatically, as well as homophobic and anti -Semitic attacks. Brutal riots, such as on New Year's Eve or in Castrop-Rauxel, Essen and Gießen, make people unsettled. More and more women are no longer feeling safe at train stations.

The English term "no-go area" comes from the military jargon and describes a dangerous restricted area. Fortunately, we are not in war. The rule of law has the means to protect its citizens from crimes. However, it is essential that these funds are used consistently.

Last was issued against a 22-year-old Somalier due to a group rape in Berlin. Ango periods and the lack of protection of the potential victims must not be accepted as sad everyday life. It is time that politicians finally clearly name the realities and take measures to restore people's trust in the rule of law. Our democracy can only work with certainty and freedom. Otherwise we risk that people turn to radical parties out of fear and despair.
