Be loud: Performance to the courage of women for peace in Dresden
In 2024, the impressive performance “Being loud” will be shown in the Bautzner Strasse memorial in Dresden. This performance, which celebrated its premiere in the Stasi headquarters in Berlin in 2022, is a tribute to the women of the GDR opposition group “Women for Peace” who fought for human rights and peace in the 1980s.
The special thing about this performance is the invitation to put the history and courage of these women in the light. Despite the intensive repression by state security, these women mobilized and called for democracy and justice without being able to get themselves down by fear. The performance focuses on the actions of these remarkable women and thus takes a different look at the GDR history and the events related to the peaceful revolution of 1989.
a place of memory
The choice of the performance location is of particular importance, since the first peace forum took place in Dresden in 1982. In addition, the “women for peace” actively participated in panel discussions in the St. Petri church. The topics that were explosive in the 1980s - such as atomic upgrading and environmental degrees - are still relevant and call to think.
In performance, personal experiences and historical reports from the book “Be loud! The women for peace in East Berlin!” together. The emotional stories experience a area of tension between private and collective memory. This link enables the audience to understand how profoundly the individual experiences are embedded in the broader historical context.
Another remarkable feature of the performance is the interactivity between stage and the audience. There is no barrier between the actresses and the spectators. This closeness creates an environment in which visitors are encouraged to express their thoughts and questions and to develop awareness of the importance of freedom of expression in a democracy.
The performance also takes bonds among the political night prayers, which were kept in churches by the “women for peace”. Multimedia elements such as video projections, music and sound effects reinforce the effect of the performance and offer an impressive light and image landscape that imparts the emotions and topics in an urgent way.
In a collective creative phase, “beyond” was not only developed from historical perspectives, but also reflects current social movements and topics related to gender and self -determination. Irena Kukutz, co -founder of the "women for peace", emphasized how the artists managed to tell the history of the rebellion alive without glorifying the women.
