District Mayor Emine Demirbüken-Wegner and District Administrator Volker-Alexander Tönnies took part in a memorial event that was reminiscent of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 in the GDR. At that time, the citizens rose against the communist system and demanded, among other things, democracy and freedom. In her speech, the mayor emphasized the importance of the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law and what radiance it already had. The district administrator also emphasized the importance of appreciating freedom and not forgetting the victims.

At that time, the demands for democratic reforms and better working and living conditions were very well received by the population.
The memorial event was accompanied by symbolic elements, such as the Bundeswehr's wax battalion and a trumpeter of the staff music corps. These should remind of the connection with the state and the memory of the victims of the uprising.
