Reform of energy management law: Renewable energies in Germany for challenges

Berlin in the crosshair of the energy transition: The Federal Association of Renewable Energy (BEE) raises the alarm! With a clear appeal, the organization calls for more flexibility and optimization in energy management law. On October 28, 2024, the BEE asked the burning question: How do we manage to combine cost efficiency with a stable energy supply?

The call is clear: The federal government has recognized the key role of renewable energies, but the way to implement it requires a clear improvement! The current reform of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) and the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is not enough. BEE President Simone Peter emphasizes: "The fast addition of system-useful power storage capacities is the spot and focal point for the future! Especially the use of battery storage during photovoltaic expansion must now be promoted."

a step back or forward?

A positive message comes from the Ministry of Economic Affairs: The planned development of network connection points is generally made possible. But the BEE representatives warn: "This decision must be accompanied by clear rights for plant operators!" In order to reduce the costly redispatch measures and to ensure the flexibility of the system, a clear timetable is essential.

But not everything is gold that shines! The intended obligation to direct marketing for systems from 25 kilowatt peak (KWP) is criticized by Peter Scharf: "It is incomprehensible why the border remains so strict if systems with significantly more power cannot find a direct marketer!" This could not only slow down the expansion, but also endanger the visibility of the projects.

positive effects urgently required

The impending exposure to the funding during negative electricity prices could have hairy consequences. The scenario stipulates that a change from time to quantity-based funding is necessary. "The concept has potential, but there are gaps that are sensitive to renewable expansion," continued Peter. The BEE has the highest demands on this reform, and these must be met!

The extremely short period of commenting on the reform is also scary. "This is not in the sense of a democratic society," finally criticizes Peter. The BEE demands a transparent and accessible political participation - especially in times when populism is a latent danger!

Time is urgently urged: In order to bring the necessary momentum into the energy transition, Germany has to show that it is ready to set the course correctly - for a stable and future -proof energy system!
