The young man was arrested by emergency services and transferred to the criminal police who issued an arrest warrant. In addition, a 31-year-old man alerted the police in his vehicle because of an attempted break-in. As a result, two suspects, 35 and 38 years old, were arrested at the parking lot of a supermarket on the Ostpreussendamm and an arrest warrant was also issued against them.

During the mission, a total of 380 police officers were mobilized who had talks with more than 1,500 citizens. 18 people and 54 vehicles were checked. This commitment was made against the background of a national challenge: in Germany the number of car thefts remain constant, with slight fluctuations, whereby the eastern federal states and the city-states of Berlin and Hamburg are particularly affected. This can also be seen in the increasing figures of the vehicles advertised in Germany, which rose to over 40,000 in 2022, which corresponds to an increase of 30% compared to the previous year

According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, the average individual damage amount of the stolen vehicles has increased due to increased vehicle values. The total damage caused by car theft amounts to just under 250 million euros in 2022 - this corresponds to around 700,000 euros per day. Nevertheless, 60% of the stolen vehicles were found. The perpetrators often act in organized gangs, which often come from Eastern Europe and work in hierarchical structures. It is believed that many of the stolen vehicles are brought abroad promptly, especially about Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

The threat from car crime remains in the near future. Perpetrators use technical skills to overcome modern security systems and have good sales options for stolen vehicles and vehicle parts. The police and various national and international institutions continue to work on combating this crime and implement projects that strengthen the investigative work and facilitate cooperation between the authorities.
