Nursing Novement Center Oldenburg and Bremen: Technological innovations to improve care

technological innovations in nursing: Cluster "Future of Care" goes into the next round

The nursing industry faces major challenges. The increasing number of people in need of care affects a shortage of skilled workers. In order to counter these problems, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the research cluster "Future of Care". The goal of the cluster is to improve care by using digital solutions and at the same time reduce the burden on nursing staff. The cluster now goes into the second funding phase, which focuses on the transfer of new technologies into practice.

The care innovation center (PIZ) in Oldenburg and Bremen plays an important role. The PIZ is an institute of the University of Oldenburg and works on new technologies together with nursing scientists and nursing economists at the University of Bremen. Ethical, social and legal aspects are also taken into account.

The focus was on the development and testing of new technologies in the first phase of the research cluster. In the second round, the transfer of these technologies is now being pushed into broad practice. These include, for example, robotic systems that relieve nursing staff in physically stressful activities, as well as technologies to support telephone care.

The University of Bremen brings extensive expertise from nursing research, nursing economy and supply research. The scientists analyze the needs of technological support in different care situations and research how technologies such as smartwatches can be integrated into everyday care. They also deal with the evaluation of the technology use.

The cluster "Future of Care" will be funded with around 20 million euros in the next five years. In addition to the piz, there are also four so -called "nursing practice centers" in Berlin, Freiburg, Hanover and Nuremberg. These play an important role in the implementation and evaluation of technologies and products.

With this initiative, important steps are taken to make nursing in Germany future -proof and to counter the challenges of increasing need for care and skills. By using digital solutions, both those in need of care and the nursing staff can be relieved and the everyday care life improved.
