Berlin: City Library at the water tower with longest opening times
The library on the Wasser Tower in Prenzlauer Allee 227/228, 10405 Berlin recently expanded its opening hours considerably. The library is now accessible to all visitors from Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., even without the presence of library staff, whereby restricted services are offered.
The decision to expand the opening times was made in response to longer opening hours, flexibility and extended access to the library rooms. In this way, reading and learning needs can also be met outside of conventional opening times, and the library area serves as a meeting point for the community.
By expanding the opening hours, the library now offers the longest opening time of a public library in Berlin. People can use the library rooms to work, learn, read or browse six days a week, take part in free events and warm up in the library in winter. The library also acts as a popular meeting place for clubs and initiatives.
The concept of the "Open Library", in which users: inside outside the regular opening times have access to the library and can use the facility, even without the presence of the staff, originally comes from Scandinavia. The first open library was opened in Denmark in 2004.
The Pankow City Library, which includes the library at the Wasser Tower, is an important institution for knowledge transfer and cultural education in Pankow. At eight locations, the city library offers a wide range of media and events as a place for lifelong learning, inspiration, encounter and critical thinking.
