Forced marriage on summer vacation: Berlin young people in danger
The summer vacation is imminent and for most children and adolescents this is a carefree and relaxing time. Unfortunately, there is also a disturbing reality in Berlin: A current survey by the Berlin working group against forced marriages has identified a total of 496 cases of (impending) forced marriage across Berlin in cooperation with the Senate Department for Labor, Social Affairs, Equality and Integration, Diversity and Anti -Discrimination. It is particularly alarming that 88 % of the compulsory marriages carried out took place abroad, mostly during the school holidays. Most of those affected grew up in Germany.
District Mayor Martin Hikel commented on this terrifying phenomenon and emphasized that forced and early marriages are clear human rights violations that have to be decisively countered. He asks to keep his eyes open and in particular teachers, social workers: to sensitize inside and specialists in schools and other institutions in order to be able to help quickly and comprehensively if such a case becomes known or is suspected.
The district office Neukölln has already set up help for young people who are threatened or affected by forced marriages and marriage privacy. Often, however, the information reaches the victims too late or not at all. For this reason, information letters with recommendations for action and background information were sent to the specialists of schools, children and youth facilities.
The information from the district office also contains direct contacts from contact persons: inside in Neukölln, Berlin counseling centers and information on combating early on. It is important to emphasize that forced marriage in Germany has been a criminal offense since 2011 that is punished with a prison sentence of six months to five years.
It is crucial that these disturbing practices are uncovered and combated to enable every girl and every woman to make a self -determined life. Further information on this topic can be found at www.berlin.de/ba-neukoelln/politik-und-verwaltte/bauplatte/Artikel.149890.php and at www.zwangsheirrat.de.
