Redesign of Karl-Marx-Platz: More space for people and nature

Attention, Neukölln! Karl-Marx-Platz will be renewed! On September 23, 2024, the starting signal for an impressive construction project, which is supposed to raise the quality of the space for all residents: inside and market businesses is to be raised to a new level. The focus? More attractiveness, better quality of stay and an optimized bicycle traffic situation!

Jochen Biedermann, the district councilor for urban development, environment and traffic, is optimistic about the future: “With this redesign, we not only create an inviting space, but also give strong impulses for climate protection and traffic safety! The historical paving design is preserved, but newly created areas will make the space a living place for all age groups!"

What are the highlights of the redesign?

The conversion takes place in two exciting construction phases. In the first section, which is to be completed by the winter of 2024/2025, the northern road is adapted. To do this, the road has to be temporarily blocked, but by dismantling the parking spaces you can accommodate cyclists - and that in both directions! A clever curb will ensure that cycling and car traffic will remain separately. The road is also provided with a bicycle -friendly covering made of sawn large stone pavement, which retains the historical look of the square.

In 2025 it really starts with the second construction phase: not only the space is renewed, but also the top of the space! New lounge areas are created, the space receives a robust surface made of concrete stone pavement with a noble natural stone facing. Here Karl-Marx-Platz becomes a real highlight for the district!

For art and cultural friends: The sculpture group “Imaginary Theater” is preserved and is harmoniously integrated into the new concept! Attractive seating and small play equipment will invite families and passers -by to linger. A planted trough and carefully designed tree slices ensure a green and inviting ambience.

The concept of sustainable drainage is particularly clever - a real profit for ecology! The rainwater is guided via special paving channels in seepage troughs, where it seeps away and the trees supplied with precious water. The former fountain pool turns into a green drainage trough and ensures a functional and ecological upgrading of the square!

And the best? The city has invested! The financial resources of 1.27 million euros come from the urban development program “Living Centers and Quartets” in the area of ​​Karl-Marx-Straße/Sonnenallee. This will soon become a real eye-catcher for everyone!
