New school year: Bishop advocates respect and tolerance in class
The bishop of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia, Stäblein, emphasized in a recent interview what important role educational institutions play for society. On Saturday, the bishop spoke to RBB radio in Berlin about how schools not only convey knowledge, but also promote social values and the ability to tolerance. With the beginning of the new school year in Berlin and Brandenburg next Monday, the discussion about these topics is coming to the fore.
Stäblein emphasized that listening to others and accepting different opinions are among the cornerstones of our society. The bishop expressed the wish that extremism and populism did not gain the upper hand. He advocated a differentiated examination of social issues instead of being satisfied with simple solutions. This is particularly important today, when many people polarize opinions.
The role of religious teaching
A central element in education, according to Stäblein, is religious instruction. This is not only a platform for conveying questions of faith, but also a "peace lessons". Respect and respect for life and all creatures would be practiced here. Stäblein sees religious instruction as a space in which the basics of tolerance and the coexistence with people different faith are taught. "The school not only promotes individual development, but also a common European feeling of identity," he added.
The values that are conveyed in religious education are particularly important to educate the youth in the spirit of humanity and democracy. Stäblein called this a fundamental goal in order to promote respect for the dignity of every person and the willingness to deal with social action. He also called for responsibility for the environment and the natural foundations of life, which is a valuable teaching for future generations.
Together with the school, essential skills are practiced. "In a world in which prejudices and hatred are often in the foreground, it is important that schools act as places of learning and respect," Stäblein concluded his explanations. These thoughts are particularly noticed in today's society, where the education system is a key role in promoting understanding and collaboration.
