NATO anniversary: uncertainty in times of growing dangers and domestic challenges

summit of uncertainty

Actually, NATO would have good reasons to celebrate its 75th anniversary at the summit in Washington. The alliance, which protects around a billion people in Europe and America, is not only the largest military alliance in the world, but also the most successful. With its foundation principle that an attack on a member is an attack on everyone, NATO has secured peace on its territory since 1949-and has become larger and more powerful.

But does that stay that way? A new feeling of uncertainty has spread about the big anniversary celebration. The dangers have been greater than ever since the end of the Cold War: from the outside since Russia attacked Ukraine a good two years ago. Kreml ruler Putin continues to upgrade during this war and is supported by an injurious alliance of China, North Korea and Iran. At the same time, the stability of the alliance is under pressure: in France, one of three nuclear powers of NATO, President Macron is struck, and the country's course is uncertain. The Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán threatens to become a Trojan horse authoritarian regime.

But not only external threats throw shadows on the anniversary celebration. In the United States in particular, NATO's central pillars of supports stake when the next president is called Trump again. It is unlikely that the United States would leave the alliance under its leadership, as Trump occasionally threatened it. America in particular needs allies. But it would be dangerous enough if Trump continued to avoid doubts about the units of the United States and thus undermine the credibility of the entire deterrent - that Putin feels encouraged to test NATO by ignition in the Baltic States. Allianz has done a lot to make itself weatherproof for a new Trump Presidency.

The insight that Europe has to do more or the other for its own defense prevails. But this realization still does not follow the consistent act: the defense spending of the European NATO countries has increased, but they also do not correspond to the necessities. Chancellor Scholz will also have to ask himself rightly critical questions in Washington after the household resolutions of the traffic lights. With the consequence of the alliance, the help for Ukraine is also missing. It is understandable that the summit does not make a formal invitation to the NATO accession in the middle of the war. However, Ukraine should be assured of a credible and temporal perspective for later admission.

The hesitation that many NATO members show in weapons and especially with long-term support for Ukraine is irresponsible. Now, especially according to the latest rocket attacks in Russia, it takes a new boost for delivery, especially of air defense systems. Germany has passed with a good example, other countries refuse. At the same time, NATO must demonstrate the will to get through a long conflict with Russia if necessary. Putin continues to speculate on a declining willingness of the West to help Ukraine militarily, financially and politically as long as necessary.

This calculation must finally cross the NATO states with all force: only when the Kreml ruler understood that he can no longer win in this war, there is a prospect of an end to the conflict.
