Munich celebrates the historical opening of the first drug consumption room - a milestone for HIV prevention

First drug consumption room is inaugurated in Bavaria

Munich, the host city of the 25th International Aids Conference AIDS2024, is faced with a historical change. Despite the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), the city has previously had to do without drug use. These spaces save and prevent the spread of HIV and hepatitis. But the Bavarian state government has not yet approved it. That should change now.

The German Aidshilfe and a large number of organizations and institutions therefore cordially invite you to the inauguration of the first drug consumption room in the Free State of Bavaria. The event will take place on July 19, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Fraunhofer Straße 21 in Munich.

Why are drug use?

In drug consumption rooms, clean spraying and consumer utensils can be provided. In the event of an overdose, first aid can be provided with an emergency medication. Consumption is relocated to a protected framework by the public, which minimizes health risks for drug users. In addition, other help offers can be made here. The WHO recommends the establishment of such rooms.

The establishment of drug consumption rooms in Germany has been legally possible since 2000. However, the state governments of Bavaria and seven other federal states have so far created no corresponding legal ordinance. The German AIDShilfe wants to start a start in cooperation with other drug help organizations in Munich and open the first drug consumption room.

Inauguration event and commemoration day for drug use

After the inauguration of the drug consumption room, an event to commemorate deceased drug use will take place on Marienplatz on the same day at 11:30 a.m. This event is intended to remind you that many people could still be alive if suitable measures were taken.

The German Aidshilfe is the official cooperation partner of the 25th International Aids Conference AIDS 2024.
