New playground in Moabit: barrier -free and for all children!
Siemensstraße, 10553 Berlin, Deutschland - On June 25, 2025, the district councilor for order, environment, nature, streets and green spaces, Christopher Schriner, announced that the renovation and modernization of the playground on Siemensstrasse in Moabit will begin on July 1, 2025. The aim is to create an attractive and inclusive place that benefits children of all ages and families. The playground will be completely closed during the construction period and the expected duration of the work is around four months. The reopening is planned for the end of 2025. The Berlin administration provided this information in a press release, which can be viewed at [berlin.de] (https://www.berlin.de/ba-mitte/aktuelles/Pressemaytungen/2025/Pressemage.
A central concern of this project is accessibility. All play equipment is designed barrier arm, which includes a wheelchair -friendly slide and a sand play house. In addition, an inclusive climbing sculpture, a cable car, swings and a balancing area are intended. The large sand play area is thematically designed around the motif freight station. These measures are part of a comprehensive initiative to promote accessibility and inclusion that includes children with physical restrictions.
importance inclusive playgrounds
barrier -free playgrounds are not only of great importance for the development of children with disabilities, but also promote playing with other children. Aktion Mensch emphasizes that playful cooperation enables the early acceptance of differences. Dr. Volker Anneken from the research institute for inclusion through movement and sport (FIBS) emphasizes how important such encounters are in order to promote an exchange between children and their accompanying persons. Unfortunately, as a study by Aktion Mensch shows, many playgrounds in Germany are not barrier -free and thus exclude children with disabilities such as wheelchair users. There is a great need for inclusive playgrounds that are actively addressed by various organizations. Further information on this topic is available on the website of [FIBS] (https://www.fi-bs.de/ Inclusion
As part of the planning for the playground on Siemensstrasse, the opinions of children, students and residents were also obtained. In the middle of the spring 2025, a participation procedure of the children's and youth office enabled the participants to bring ideas and wishes to the final planning. The investment of the Mitte district for these renovation measures amounts to around 460,000 euros and is financed via the daycare and playground renovation program (KSSP).
The redesign of the playground on Siemensstrasse is a step in the right direction for an inclusive society in which children can play together with different needs. The city of Berlin is making progress to ensure accessibility on playgrounds and thus achieve an important goal of social integration.
