European neighborhood walk: between the common good and private sector interests

The district councilor for urban development and facility management, Ephraim Gothe, informs about this year's neighborhood walk of the Moabit-Ost district coordination, which will lead through Europe. The Europacity is located north of the Berlin main station in the former border area between Eastern and West Berlin and shows the conflict of Berlin urban development between common good orientation and private sector interests. The neighborhood walk takes place on Monday, April 29, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and starts at the main train station (Europaplatz 1, 10557 Berlin).

The Europacity was a former railway site that was characterized in the 2000s by cultural intermediate use, living and commercial space. Today it is an urban development area that is mainly developed privately. Around 3000 apartments are planned on an area of around 40 hectares, of which 257 social housing from Berlin is funded. Furthermore, more than 16,000 jobs are to be created.

The neighborhood walk starts with an introduction to the development of the Europacity and leads to the Humboldthafen, where individual buildings and the waterfront have already been realized with gastronomic use. We continue along the new buildings to the old building of the quarter on Heidestraße, where the Carl Bechstein Foundation wants to build a campus. The interaction between public and private space on Otto-Weiddt-Platz and the use of public space in the district are also discussed.

The neighborhood walk ends at the Hamburg train station, which as a Museum of Contemporary Art offers various exhibitions for international audiences. The district plenum will then take place from 5 p.m. in the Hamburg train station, in which the topics of the neighborhood walk are deepened. The current Situation in Europe and the neighborhood is illuminated and discussed which structures are necessary to create a common good -oriented neighborhood with social and cultural offers.

Participation in the neighborhood walk is free of charge, but only to a limited extent. Special needs should be reported in advance. The press office of the Mitte district at press@ba-mitte.berlin.de is available for media inquiries. Further information is available from the Moabit Ost district coordination.
