Equal Pay Day 2024: Events in Berlin and discussion about financial inequality

The district mayor of Mitte, Stefanie Remlinger, informed in her press release No. 032/2024 of February 20, 2024 about the upcoming Equal Pay Day on March 6, 2024. Under the motto "High time for Equal Pay", the still existing wage relief between women and men is made aware. In particular, it is emphasized that women work almost three times as often as men because they often take on most of the care work. This is one of the reasons for the gender pay gap of 18 percent. Even with a comparable industry, qualification and position, women still earn 6% less per hour than men. In order to draw attention to the Equal Pay Day, a flag hissing will take place on March 5, 2024 in front of the Tiergarten town hall.

A joint event of the state working group of the district equal opportunities officer, the district office Spandau, Dr. Reyhan Sahin, Prof. Heide Parish, Tayo Awosusi-Onutur and Dr. Doris Liebscher will also deal with the connection between gender, migrant and class gap. The focus is on the interaction of sexist discrimination, racist discrimination and discrimination against social background. The effects of unevenly distributed care work, the massive wage differences between industries with a high proportion of men and industries with a high proportion of women as well as the direct wage discrimination of women themselves with the same work are mentioned as important reasons for financial inequality.

The upcoming events are important milestones in dealing with the topic of wage inequality in Germany and especially in Berlin. The table below shows some facts and numbers that illustrate the extent of the Gender Pay Gaps.

It remains to be hoped that these events will raise awareness of the equalization of wages and contribute to positive changes in society.
