Urban development strengthens participation in arrival quarters
The urban development of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district has been participating in the project "Participation in new arrival quarters" since April 2024. This cooperation project, funded by the Mercator Foundation and coordinated by the Institute for State and Urban Development Research, the TU Berlin and the German Institute for Urban Studies, comprises a total of 12 municipalities from different regions of Germany. The aim of the project is to strengthen quarters that have experienced a new form of immigration in recent years.
The first inter-municipal network meeting recently took place in Duisburg-Marxloh, in which administrative employees from the participating municipalities (including Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Bremerhaven, Dresden, or Potsdam) came together to discuss the potential of these quarters with the partners from accompanying research. The Schwelgern-Café offered a platform for a lively exchange about social participation and cohesion of immigrants.
The project manager Dr. Isabel Ramos Lobato from the Institute for State and Urban Development Research emphasized how important it is to direct the focus from deficits and instead to recognize the individual potential of the new immigrants. Because regardless of the duration of your stay, you are an essential part of society.
In the table below, some of the cities and municipalities involved are listed, which are committed to strengthening arrival quarters as part of the project:
| City/municipality | State |
| ——————- | ———————– |
| Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf | Berlin |
| Bremerhaven | Bremen |
| Dresden | Saxony |
| Duisburg | North Rhine-Westphalia |
| Gevelsberg | North Rhine-Westphalia |
| Kaiserslautern | Rhineland-Palatinate |
| Offenbach | Hessen |
| Potsdam | Brandenburg |
| Rostock | Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania |
| Saalfeld | Thuringia |
| Salzgitter | Lower Saxony |
This project is an important step to strengthen the participation of newly immigrants in German cities and to promote cohesion within society. It shows that arrival quarters play a central role in the social structure of a city and supports them in developing their full potential.
