Students plant 5,250 trees in Berliner Schulwald

In March and April 2024, pupils from the Bookworm primary school and the school on the Mummeloll planted a total of 5,250 young trees and shrubs on an area of 12,000 square meters on an area of 12,000 square meters. This extensive planting project was initiated by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority and supported by the street and green space office of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. The seedlings came from the Lürssen Forst Bame School near Müncheberg, while two cold blood horses with the plow have the plant trenches in the surface enforced by the rubble.

The goal of the project is to create a structurally rich and climate-stable mixed forest with grape oaks and hornbeam over the years west of the Louis-Lewin-Straße. In addition, different types of shrubs such as hazelnut, elderberry, snowball, pfaffenhütchen and hardwear should form a graded edge of the forest, which offers food and habitat.

The new forest area should be integrated into the lessons in the long term so that the pupils can follow the development of their school forest and understand the complex relationships in the forest ecosystem.

For the coming autumn 2024, further planting campaigns are already planned. Dead poplars are removed in some areas of the landscape protection area, with back horses being used again for gentle wood transport. This careful forest conversion will continue to be continued in the Hönower pond chain in order to ensure a healthy and future -oriented forest.

The residents are actively involved in the care of the forest and already support in various measures. In the future, signs should also indicate the newly created areas in order to optimally support the growth of the seedlings.
