Kienbergpark: starting shot for ecological redesign

On Monday, January 22, 2024, a walk with the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and Environment (SenmVKU), Grün Berlin GmbH and district mayor Nadja Zivkovic took place in the winter Kienbergpark. Around 40 citizens took part in visiting the preparatory measures for the climate silver silent redesign of the park. The Kienbergpark is to be upgraded and maintained in the long term as a ecological compensation area in the lead project Biotope network Wuhletal of the Berlin eco -account. It is planned to build up a stable mixing of deciduous forest, create a wide range of forest edges and to develop and maintain open land. The aim is to strengthen the biological diversity and climate -like.

The careful and gradual project of the forest conversion is based on a nature conservation concept that was coordinated with the authorities and nature conservation associations. Over 13,000 new trees are to be planted in the course of the project, whereby exclusively location -adapted plant species are used. For example, field maple, forest jaw, salt pasture, mountain elms, hornbeam and grape oak should be planted.

An important first step is to contain and withdraw the invasive plant species, so -called neophytes, since healthy plant growth is not possible without light and nutrients. The wood of the cut plants remains as a biologically valuable deadwood in the field and serves different animal species as a habitat.

The entire project comprises an area of 9.1 hectares and is one of the compensation projects of the lead project Biotope network Wuhletal. The costs amount to around 4.7 million euros and are pre -financed from the special fund infrastructure of the growing city (Siwa). Grün Berlin GmbH takes over the building owner function and is responsible for controlling the sub -project in the Kienbergpark.

In the following table, some relevant information is summarized for the project:

| Project name | Kienbergpark ecological upgrading |
| —————————— | --—————————— | Measure | Forest conversion |
| Planting area | 9.1 hectares |
| Cost | 4.7 million euros |
| Financing | Special funds infrastructure of the growing city |

The project of the ecological renovation of the Kienberg Park is an important step towards sustainable urban development and strengthening the ecological diversity in Berlin. It shows the commitment of the city of Berlin in climate protection and environmental protection, as well as the efforts to maintain and strengthen biological diversity.
