Finally! S-Bahnhof Gehrenseestrasse reopened after 1.5 years!

After a year and a half construction period, the passengers of the S-Bahn Berlin can finally breathe a sigh of relief! The Gehrenseestrasse S-Bahnhof in the Lichtenberg district was reopened on Monday, December 9, 2024, after extensive modernization work. Since June 2023, the train station was closed because of the renovation work, which aimed to make the train station barrier -free and to improve the quality of stay. With the reopening, the S75 line is now also available on Gehrenseestrasse, which significantly improves the connection for the residents, as berlin-live.de reported.

modern equipment for more security

The modernized train station comes with a new elevator and improved path management for visually impaired people who make it much easier to orientate. These measures are part of the efforts of Deutsche Bahn to increase accessibility. "We want the railway to be reached equally for all people," said Alexander Kaczmarek, the authorized representative of Deutsche Bahn for Berlin and Brandenburg. In addition, the new LED lighting ensures a bright and safe atmosphere on the platform. All existing elements such as loudspeakers, information monitors, flooring, roof and even the benches were replaced, which leads to an almost renewed appearance of the station, as rbb24.de supplemented.

A total of over 13 million euros were invested in this project, funded by the state of Berlin, Deutsche Bahn and the BUND as part of the "funding initiative to increase attractiveness and accessibility of train stations". Traffic senator Ute Bonde (CDU) emphasizes that such modernizations strengthen local public transport and support the objectives of the Berlin Mobility Act. The renovation of the Gehrenseestraße Bahnhof thus takes an important step to improve public transport infrastructure in the capital.
