Art and nature: a rendezvous in the historic park on the Jungfernsee!
On Sunday, July 6, 2025, the Park of Villa Jacobs at Potsdamer Jungfernsee opens its gates for visitors again. With its eight hectares, the park offers a green oasis, which is lovingly cared for by three gardeners and tree doctors. The symbiosis of old trees, colorful flower perennes and carefully placed sculptures on stone socks create a unique ambience.
The Villa Jacobs was acquired in 1835 by Ludwig Jacobs, a wealthy sugar manufacturer and art patrils. It is built in Italian style according to plans by Ludwig Persius and is located in a landscape park that was designed by the famous landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné. This park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an example of magnificent garden art in Germany. Ludwig Jacobs was committed to reducing slavery in sugar cane plantations, a fact that was often pushed into the background in historiography.
The rediscovery and renovation
after Jacob's death in 1879, his name was forgotten until historian Marianne Ludes rediscovered him in her book. The villa and the park have been the seat of the non-profit Ludes Foundation, which was founded by Marianne and Stefan Ludes, since 2021. In the years after the Second World War, the villa served as a kindergarten and was neglected after the wall building. In 2005 the ludes acquired the property to subject the villa and the park of comprehensive restoration.
The Ludes Foundation plans an impressive series of exhibitions, which focuses on the bronze of the sculptor Karl Hartung. Hartung, a German artist of post -war modernism, creates works that often have a connection to nature. The first exhibition of this series, with the title "Questions about Nature", presents eleven of his bronze sculptures in the park and reflects the topics, pass as well as transience.
opening times and guided tours
The exhibition is open until the end of September 2025 and can be visited on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours are offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about the connection between art and nature. For those who are looking for more information, the official website of the Villa Jacobs is available, which offers detailed insights and contact options here .
The park of Villa Jacobs and the associated history not only reflect art history, but also offer a nostalgic review of social and cultural developments in the region. By preserving and revitalizing this important historical site, the Ludes Foundation and its supporters contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage and create a space for numerous creative experiences.
