Critical flood location in Orenburg
Critical flood location in Orenburg
The water levels in Russia in the south of the Ural Mountains continue to reach critical values. In Orenburg, the Urals river stood at a stand of 9.78 meters, which is above the critical brand. Experts predict a further increase in water by 30 to 70 centimeters. In Orenburg alone, 12,800 houses and 14,900 garden plots were flooded, which led to more than 7,000 people had to be evacuated.
The effects of the flood were far -reaching, with several villages without electricity and institutions such as courts and museums had to hire their business. The extent of the flood is described by Russian state media as a "flood of centuries with apocalyptic dimensions", whereby the city of Orsk was particularly difficult to hit.
The rising water levels are due to massive snow and ice melt in the Ural Mountains, accompanied by strong rainfall. Despite the catastrophe, some criticize that not enough was done to prepare for spring floods. The authorities have now taken measures, including the establishment of emergency accommodation and increased police patrols to prevent looting.
