Climate protests and their consequences: A look at the financial claims of the Federal Police

In the past few months, the protest campaigns of the "Last generation" climate group have attracted a lot of attention, especially because of the disorders at various airports, including the capital airport BER in Berlin. These actions have not only led to an increased security effort, but also to a controversial discussion about the costs that the activists should now be invoiced.

Financial consequences for activists

The federal police now charge fees of around 6,400 euros from the climate activists who were involved in the protests on BER. These demands are based on the interference campaigns, which took place on November 24 and December 8, 2022 and on May 5, 2023. In a total of 16 cases, fee notices have already been issued, of which in 11 cases those affected can no longer object, since the notices are final.

The amount of the fees

Interestingly, the required amounts vary greatly, depending on the duration of the use of the police and the number of officials deployed. For example, a total of 3,050 euros for 6 climate activists were set for the use on December 8, 2022, which came to a blocked area of the airport. For another incident in May 2023, when activists sprayed a private machine with color, a fee of around 2,280 euros for 7 people will be charged.

Advanced security measures and legal steps

In order to prevent further disorders, the federal police have strengthened the security measures at the airports in Berlin-Brandenburg. This follows similar protests at other German airports such as Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt/Main and Leipzig. In addition, the city of Berlin is in court against climate activists who sprayed the Brandenburg Gate with color on September 17, 2023 and demands around 142,000 euros in damages.

The broader perspective of the climate movement

The increasing financial demands on climate activists raise the question of how these forms of protest in society are perceived. Other authorities also try to demand the costs of damage and operational institutions from the parties involved, but this is often difficult. As a survey of the "daily mirror" shows, many districts decide to finance minor damage from their own resources instead of taking legal action.

The discussion about the financial consequences of climate protests is not only a question of the legal situation, but also one of the social acceptance of such actions. Resistance to climate change has gained urgency in recent years, and the various reactions on it reflect the tensions that exist in the current debate about environmental and climate protection.
