Cooperation contract for environmental education: New project in Berlin-Mitte!
On today's international diversity day, May 22nd, 2025, an important cooperation agreement between the School Environment Center Mitte and the Natural History Museum Berlin was signed. This initiative was announced by Benjamin Fritz, the district councilor for school and sports. The participants in this festive signing were also Stephan Junker, Managing Director of the Natural History Museum, and Dr. Susanne Hecker.
The contract aims to develop joint educational formats and further training in order to further strengthen environmental education in Berlin. This cooperation will support and accompany both the school environment center, which is one of the largest and most important institutions for environmental education in Berlin, as well as the natural history museum. As Naturstadt Berlin emphasizes that the center enables the students to experience nature with all their senses. The focus here is on gardening projects as well as topics such as healthy eating, consumer education and sustainability. This not only promotes understanding of environmental protection, but also awareness of the preservation of biological diversity.
Education for sustainability
The importance of environmental education also becomes clear through international endeavors to actively involve young people in the concepts and methods of environmental education. According to the Federal Environment Agency , these approaches are crucial for a sustainable social transformation. It is clear that the effect of environmental education projects depends on a variety of factors, especially in informal and extracurricular contexts.
The new cooperation expected that pupils and adolescents are more involved in the design and implementation of environmental education measures. This could not only increase learning motivation, but also promote sustainable learning success.
