No lionin in Berlin: police confirmed by Fehalarm

Berlin - Since last week, the search for an alleged lioness in southern Berlin has kept hundreds of police officers. Now it is clear: the animal you are looking for is not a lion, but a herbivore. This resulted in the first evaluation of a feces sample from the viewing site near Kleinmachnow south of Berlin. A spokeswoman for the Potsdam-Mittelmark district confirmed that there was no reason to accept a lion.

In order to finally clarify the case, a hair sample is also examined. The sample is compared to the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Leipzig with a real lion hair. Since the hair root is missing during the hair sample found, the comparison should provide information about the exact species.

The search for the supposed predator made headlines across Germany and internationally. However, the authorities rated the situation as harmless last Friday and saw no acute danger. In addition, search actions, including the use of helicopters and drones, provided no indication of a free -running big cat.

The commitment of the police and the municipality of Kleinmachnow began based on a mobile phone video of a witness that was supposed to show a lioness in the forest. According to an initial assessment, the police assumed that a lioness was actually in the wild. Due to the supposed risk, there was temporarily a "Löwen-Lockdown" in the region.

Now the residents of Kleinmachnow and the surrounding area can be calmed down because no lioness was sighted in the area. The animal sought is a herbivore. However, the exact type of animal will only be known after comparing the hair sample. Until then, it remains open which animal it is.

The lion search in Berlin thus turned out to be a false alarm that dealt with the media and the population alike. The police and the municipality of Kleinmachnow can now go back to normal and devote themselves to other tasks.
