Youth hostels are committed to building democracy and promoting tolerance

At the European elections on June 9, adolescents have the opportunity for the first time to give up their vote and thus have a say in the composition of the European Parliament. The German Jugendherbergswerk e.V. (DJH) has developed special offers for children and adolescents in order to convey democratic education in a vivid way. International youth exchange programs also play an important role here.
The DJH is committed to democratic learning and the promotion of tolerance and international understanding and, together with experts, offers special programs that should support educators in the mediation of democratic values. For example, as part of a school trip at memorials such as Dachau and Ravensbrück, children can experience the importance of Nazi past for the present. Further offers deal with the prevention of (cyber) bullying and fascism as well as democratic training and play about the topic of local politics.
The commitment of the DJH for democratic values and participation is not only important with regard to the European elections, but is fundamentally important. The youth hostels not only offer programs for school trips, but also international youth meetings that bring young participants from different countries. A special multilateral event called "IOU Respect: Building A Culture of Peace" should bring young people from Egypt, Germany, France, Lebanon, Tunisia and the USA together to reduce prejudices and to promote international understanding.
The DJH has a clear order with regard to civil society and the common good and is supported by around 2.4 million members. The youth hostels not only see themselves in responsibility to provide accommodation, but continue to work for important values such as democracy education and promoting tolerance. Further information on the offers in the field of democratic education and the international youth encounters can be found on the website of the DJH.
