NABU annual report 2023: A review of nature conservation and social challenges
The NABU (Nature Conservation Association of Germany) published its annual report for 2023, showing both successes and challenges in the field of nature conservation. Despite an eleven-year-old political upheaval, which is characterized by the geopolitical tensions, such as the war in Ukraine, the report shows that the commitment of the society for environmental and nature conservation continues and even increases.
with over 854,000 members and an increase in membership fees to 34.1 million euros in 2023, the NABU sees itself as an important voice in nature conservation and as a contact point for environmentally conscious citizens. NABU President Jörg-Andreas Krüger described the development within the number of members as "encouraging" and underlined that the growing number of over 70,000 volunteers is a sign that interest in nature conservation is unbroken, even in turbulent times.
The topics of the climate and the environment were the focus of political discussions in Germany last year. While climate change and its effects, such as skinny and floods, are increasingly noticeable, there are still significant political priority shifts. The pressure on the traffic sector, for example, remains inadequate what Krüger finds it as worrying. He warns of the risk that political measures such as planning accelerations could go at the expense of nature.
The challenges due to the loss of species and the progressive environmental destruction remain, which considerably burdens the framework conditions for nature conservation projects. The NABU emphasizes that the implementation of the European Green Deal and the federal budget must play a crucial role in order to be able to effectively counter these challenges. New approaches and responsible use of natural resources are urgently required here.
A positive turn can be seen in the growing sensitivity of companies for their ecological footprint. More and more companies are making changes that should also promote nature conservation. This development is a glimmer of hope at a time when nature often gets out of view of the political agenda.
The NABU remains a key factor for ecological change in Germany and calls for a rethink in politics. In the midst of the numerous crises that have occurred, the need for a strong civil society that drives nature conservation is increasingly clear. The long -term use of NABU and the broad support of the citizens shows that a rethink is possible to protect the habitats and biodiversity.
