Hunger strike for climate crisis: activist demands an answer from Chancellor
In a spectacular protest, Wolfgang Metzeler started a hunger strike in front of the Chancellery in Berlin to draw the attention of Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the climate crisis. He has been without solid food for 42 days and even announced a thirst strike. The government initially did not respond to its demands. As early as 2021, activists had started a similar hunger strike and reached a meeting with Scholz after 26 days. Metzeler has now received support from other hungry, including Richard Cluse and Michael Winter.
The demands of the activists include a drastic change of course in climate policy in view of the existential situation for human civilization. Metzeler emphasizes the urgency of the topic and is ready to lead his hunger strike to the utmost in order to force the government into a serious reaction. The supporters of the campaign, like Linda Doblinger from the last generation, require political decision -makers to communicate honest communication about the climate catastrophe, based on scientific facts.
Despite the pressure on the part of the hungry, the government has so far remained indomitable and described its climate policy as on the right path. Metzeler commented on this with the statement that Scholz wanted to let him die by not going to the protests. The activists continue to hope that their commitment will move the government to rethink and lead to concrete measures in the fight against the climate crisis.
