Warnstreik at Rewe, Edeka, Ikea & Co.- Hundreds of employees of the individual and wholesale trade demand better wages

On Thursday, employees in wholesale in Berlin and Brandenburg were already on strike for higher wages, and on Friday, employees in retail were now also setting up the work. There were affected branches of Kaufland, Rewe, Edeka, Ikea and H&M.

Several hundred employees of wholesale and retailers took part in a warning strike rally in Berlin to emphasize their reinforcements. The Verdi union had called for a full -day warning strike in both industries. "Despite the holiday season, the participation is great," said Verdi negotiator Conny Weißbach on Friday.

The warning strike affected were branches and warehouse of Kaufland, Rewe, Edeka, Ikea, H&M and Karstadt Galeria Kaufhof. The focus of the strike was in Brandenburg. Wholesale has been on strike since Thursday.

The Verdi union calls for around 230,000 employees in both federal states a wage increase of EUR 2.50 per hour and a minimum wage of EUR 13.50 per hour. Verdi calls for a wage increase of 13 percent in wholesale. The negotiations affect around 53,800 employees here. The collective agreements should have a term of 12 months.

In retail, employers offer a wage increase of 5.3 percent from October 2023 and a wage increase of 5.1 percent in wholesale from September 2023. The EDEKA retail chain announced that the current retail range includes a wage increase of 7.5 percent over a term of 24 months and an inflation compensation premium of 1,000 euros.

Nils Busch-Petersen from the Berlin-Brandenburg trade association emphasized that employers take the strikes seriously. However, he does not assume that branches have to close. "Traditionally, we springs so that customers only learn about the media that it is striked," said Busch-Petersen. Verdi negotiator Conny Weißbach also does not believe that branches have to close. However, it could be that not all shelves are always full in the coming days and it takes longer at the cash registers.

Customers will probably hardly notice the strike. The negotiations between Verdi and the employers continue.
