growing health risks through heat

heat represents one of the largest climate change -related health risks in Germany. Various groups of people are particularly at risk that have specific risk factors. According to the Federal Ministry of Health it is crucial to provide the population effectively about the health risks through heat and possible protective measures.

The previous challenges lie primarily in the lack of target group -oriented communication and the systematic access routes for heat protection education. In order to counteract this, a "Heat protection plan for health" was launched, which is intended to contribute to the prevention of heat -related health damage. In this context, communication guidelines for people with disabilities were developed to address this group in a targeted manner.

The role of monitoring systems

The Robert Koch-Institut (rki) has been observing the consequences of heat on human health and has studies on the heating Extendability carried out. In view of the increasing average temperatures of climate change, an increase in health impairments will be expected in the coming decades. Vulnerable groups such as old people, pregnant women, children and people with chronic diseases will be affected.

In order to provide optimal provision and information, good monitoring is essential. The RKI works closely with various ministries, authorities and institutions to develop effective measures in the field of heat protection. This also includes the exchange with international actors, for example via the International Association of National Public Health Institute.

The initiative of the DRK district association is an important step to offer affected people support in the coming heat season and thus prevent health damage.
