Legal pension 2023: New regulations of the additional earnings limits from July
Around 5.5 million people in Germany received a survivor's pension from statutory pension insurance in 2023. This is a financial support for survivors who are supposed to secure the livelihood. Of these recipients, around 656,000 people of working age between the ages of 20 and 64 are. The annual adjustment of the additional earnings limits is particularly important for this group, since they can earn more about it from July 1st.
The German Pension Insurance Federation indicates this new regulation on the occasion of the international day of the widow on June 23. From July 1, 2024, the income limits for survivors who receive a pension from the statutory pension insurance will increase by around 45 euros from 992.64 euros to EUR 1,038.05 a month. In addition, the allowance for every child who is entitled to an orphan pension increases by 220 euros. If the income exceeds the fixed allowance, the amount in addition will be taken into account 40 percent and the pension is shortened accordingly. However, this does not apply to orphans that may earn indefinitely.
The calculation of the additional earnings limit is based on the average net service in the previous year of pension adjustment. For adaptation to July 1, 2024, the period from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. If earnings have been increased, for example, due to a change from part-time to full-time employment, the higher income will only be taken into account from the next adaptation date, i.e. on July 1, 2025.
Almost all types of income are counted towards the survivor's pension. Exceptions are need -oriented services such as unemployment benefit II, basic security in old age and in the event of a reduction in earning capacity as well as social assistance. Income from state-funded pension contracts such as the Riester pension are also not counted.

As a regional editor in Berlin, it is important to note that the information mentioned is valid across Germany. Many people of different age groups live in Berlin that could be affected by this new regulation. It could make sense to insert local case studies in order to give readers a better idea of the effects. It could also be interesting to insert historical facts about the development of the survivor's pension in order to illustrate the context of the current new regulation.
