Hasso Plattner transforms Potsdam: New university campus in sight!

On June 2, 2025, the Hasso Plattner Foundation announced that it would take over the financing for the renovation of the old state parliament on the Brauhausberg in Potsdam. This ambitious project aims to create a new university campus to solve the existing conflicts with the University of Potsdam. Hasso Plattner, co -founder of SAP, describes this project as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. The exact costs for the conversion and new construction of several buildings are still unclear, but Plattner estimates that they will move in the three -digit million range.

With the planned restructuring, the faculties for legal, social and economics from the Griebnitzsee campus will move to the Brauhausberg. This could mean that the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) can double its number of students from 1,000 to up to 2,000. The number of professorships could also increase and thus offer high quality training.

investment in research and development

A central element of the project is the increased investment in research and development, especially in the field of artificial intelligence. The HPI plans to create a contact point for US scientists and students who are under pressure. Plattner expressed his concerns about the current situation at US universities and sees great opportunities for Germany. He appeals to other wealthy people to invest in education.

Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke describes the project as a win-win-win situation for the HPI, the University of Potsdam and the state of Brandenburg. The university itself could benefit financially by selling its buildings on the Griebnitzsee campus, which would enable additional funds for development.

Promotion of artificial intelligence in university formation

In the context of training at the new university location, the promotion of artificial intelligence (AI) will also be important. Since the end of 2021, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has supported the use of AI in university formation. As part of the federal-state initiative "Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education", projects for the development of courses and AI-based systems are funded. The BMBF's AI campaign, which was published on November 7, 2023, aims to provide the necessary competencies and infrastructures in order to further develop key technology AI in the university system.

There are also numerous initiatives for the development of intelligent assistance systems and learning platforms, such as the AI campus, which provides online courses for AI. Actors such as the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and various competence centers strive to further promote the use of AI in education and training. In this context, the influence of AI-based chatbots on university formation is also discussed in terms of topics such as quality and source information.
